History of the Club

Susquehanna Retriever Club is a non-profit retriever club now based on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  The club was established in 1989, was sanctioned by the American Kennel Club in 1991, and was an original member club of the Master National Retriever Club, joining also in 1991.

Originally the club was based in the northern Maryland and Pennsylvania area of the Susquehanna River.  The original By-laws and Constitution of the club were written by Mary White, who together with her husband, Mike White, were founding members of the SRC.

The SRC holds 2 Hunt Tests annually, which are very well coordinated and attended.  The club proudly owns enough equipment to set up for all three series of Master dogs, as well as both series of Junior or Senior dogs at one time.

Besides putting on great tests, we are known for our hospitality as we have hot and cold home-made breakfasts and lunches for purchase at every test.  This tradition was started by Herb (aka “Smitty”, aka “Pappy”) and Evelyna Smith, who are also founding members.  All four founding members established a strong platform for long-term success and the club still today tries to uphold the embedded traditions they all started.  Sadly, both Smitty and Mary are no longer with us and we miss them deeply.

Today the club has approximately 45 members, mainly living on the eastern shore of Maryland or Delaware, but some members still live in the Susquehanna area.

The SRC was honored to host the 2011 Master National, with the SRC President, Frank Durham, selected as the Chairman of the 2011 Master National Retriever Hunt Test.  Many members and the Chairman have competed in and been involved with MNRHT events for many years.  In the near future the club is looking to expand to host Super Retriever Series as well as some Field Trial stakes.  We welcome any and all who share the love of working retrievers and are interested to join our club.
